Flower Power!

Hello and Happy Friday!

Tina here again for my final post as a Guest Designer for Splash of Color.  I would like to thank Cheryl for inviting me to share my passion and creativity with y’all.  I have enjoyed my week with you and I hope to see you around Cyber-land soon. 

For my final project, I created a Home Décor Art piece that evolved from a sheet of Birdie Darling paper, LuminArte Silks Acrylic Glaze, and LuminArte Primary Elements.  I love putting these basic items together to create a unique, one of a kind work of art.

To start my Home Décor project, I used this paper, Birdie Darling as a painting template.  When I first started this project, my intention was to paint the flowers and just frame the sheet of colorful paper.  But, (like many of my projects), my ideas and inspiration evolved and changed, and what I ended with was entirely different.

And what the colored paper looked like at the ‘end’. 

You can see that the transparent nature of the silks look beautiful on the paper, allowing the detail of each flower to still be visible.  This would be a beautiful work of art displaying on your wall, but I went past this stage and kept creating.  ;)

I have ‘mildly’ obsessed with anything wax these days, (okay, so mildly is a little understated), so I wondered what my sheet of painted paper would look like if I covered it with wax. 

Well, let me show you.

The wax created a softness to the harsh black lines and the texture was amazing, BUT, I wanted more.  So back to the drawing board.

Using the project I shared on Wednesday (my Art Journal page) as inspiration, I painted several large flowers on my paper with Distress Paint.  I wanted a more opaque image against the translucent background and this was the look I wanted. 

As my painted flowers dried, I realized the background was a bit busy for my bold, bright flowers, so I struggled with what to do next.

I got it!  I’ll make my own colored Gel Medium with LuminArte Primary Elements.  I mixed up a batch of Pink Crocus, (part of the ‘It’s Springtime’ set) colored Gel Medium and proceeded to cover the background.  What is great about this is that peeks of pattern and color are still visible through the colored Gel Medium, so I didn’t lose the beautiful background entirely. 

Once it was dry, I outlined my flowers with wax pastels, charcoal, and black and white pens.  Love how the color just POPS off the background.

Dabbling in Mixed Media with Heather!

 Have you had the luck to take a class from Cheryl? She taught at my local scrapbooking store just a few months ago. It was a blast! The format was open and allowed us students to play with paints and products according to our whims.

 On the day of the class, I picked up a discounted calendar with an Audrey Hepburn theme. Here is the mini book I made.

Luminarte Twinkling H20's are watercolor paints with a beautiful shimmer of mica!  I like to use them sometimes with my Luminarte Radiant Rain!  I just dip my brush into the paint and paint with them.

Welcome Guest Designer Sue Whittemore!

I am very excited to share a bit about myself and my work on the Splash of Color blog!  

I always knew that i would be involved in some type of Art since attending Art School!  I cannot remember a time in my life when I did not use paint as a medium into my crafts and my decor, I even painted images of all the Winnie the Pooh characters on the wall of a child's room

Since retiring I am able to spend alot of time with my two teenage grandchildren, Tess and Emma, who I thoroughly enjoy.  I live with my Siamese cat, Ming Mei, who is very devious and feisty but I still love her.  

I always knew that i would be involved in some type of Art since attending Art School!  I cannot remember a time in my life when i did not use paint as a medium into my crafts and my decor, I even painted images of all the Winnie the Pooh characters on the wall of a child's room

In addition to painting, I enjoy making quilts, machine embroidery, working with felt, wool and roving.  I also love to make greeting cards for various stores in our area. 

But since my niece, Cheryl Mezzetti, introduced me to mixed media and the Splash of Color products, I have been concentrating on learning all the techniques and products thanks to Cheryl's expertise.   She shared with me how easy it is to use the Splash of Color paints!  I am hooked - so of course when I needed to make some tags for my swap I had to use the paints!  Splash of Color's beautiful mixed media products and Catherine Moore's Character Construction stamps are a match made in heaven.  

For my swap I created 5 tags using many of the Splash of Color products!  For this first tag, I stamped the mermaid image onto a piece of white cardstock.  I rubbed with Viva Colour Inka gold ~ blue, for the base of her tail.  

I mixed together the Viva Colour "Pearl" Modeling Cream with Luminarte Primary Elements{i can change the color of their pearl or champagne modeling cream just by mixing in Luminarte primary elements}.  Using the "Quartrefoil" 6x6 stencil from The Crafters Workshop and a palette knife, I covered the tail and quickly dried it with a heat tool.  

Her necklace was easy to create - I rubbed a bit of the Viva Colour Inka Gold ~ Blue onto the Oceanside small resin pieces and viola ~ finished!

Supplies used: Viva Colour Inka gold paste "blue", Modeling Cream "pearl" mixed with Luminarte primary elements "dragon fly", Viva Colour Inka Gold paste "gold"rubbed with my fingers onto the compass, Viva Colour Inka Gold Paste "blue" painted onto Oceanside small resin "starfish" and for the hair I used the stamp Posh Limited by Dee Gruenig "prairie grass" and stamped with Colorbox ink.

Mix it Up by Donna Bryant!!!

Hey Scrappers, Donna here again today so lets "Mix it Up" !!!  

For today's layout, I’ve mixed a piece of corregated cardboard, Twinkling H20s and papers from the Beautiful You, Awkward Family and Samantha Walker’s Tea Party collections. And oh!  There are some Paint It! word stickers, ribbon, a half piece of a zipper, lace, and buttons thrown in to today’s “mix” as well  .  

Here is our "Mix it Up" layout for today:

 

And here are your instructions:

Tear a piece of corregated cardboard to approximately 6" x 2".  Paint "ribbed" area heavily with Luminarte Solar Gold Twinkling H20s.  

Determine what photo size you will be using on your layout (I used a wallet size) and cut a white matt for the photo, making the matt size approximately 1/4" larger than your photo size.   Heavily paint the matt with Luminarte Solar Gold Twinkling H20s.  

Choose two (2) word stickers from the Devotion Words (I used "giddy" and "together").   Paint lightly with Luminarte Pink Azela Twinkling H20s.   Set aside to dry.

Select the design of Awkward Family Photos 12 x 12 paper to use as your layout base - you will need two (2) of the same - and set aside.  I used "Awkward Love".  The papers in this line can serve double duty here as they will serve as your page title and layout base at the same time! 

Punch five (5) hearts from the Beautiful You papers.  Set aside.

Punch two (2) photo corners from the Tea Party Floral Plaid paper.  Set aside. 

Punch or cut out  the layout base sentiment from the top, left portion of a piece of Awkward Family 12 x 12 paper and set aside (I punched the "Certified Awkward" circle.  Set aside.

Select a piece of paper from the Beautiful You papers and cut a piece approximately 1" larger than your photo. Use an edge punch to create a decorative edge on this piece.  Adhere this piece behind your matted photo and adhere the matted photo (do not put glue on bottom half of photo) to the center of the cardboard piece.

Determine placement of cardboard (the photo is already on it), four (4) hearts, two (2) photo corners, lace, ribbon, zipper. buttons, and stickers at bottom of layout and adhere to layout base.  Adhere sentiment piece to layout base with foam tape over the same area of your laout base.  (I used "Certified Awkward").  

 

Stitch buttons.

Wrap twine around bottom edge of photo and attach at right, layout edge with staple. Adhere one (1) punched heart over twine.

You know, you may want to try another one of this design to lay vertical on your page.   Fun!!

March Mix it Up!

 Hey Scrappers, Donna here, and welcome to the March "Mix it Up"!, where I  "mix" pieces of at least three (3) different product lines together and incorporate them into one  fantastic page, with simple directions included!

This month's layout includes Splash of Color's Luminarte and Paint It! products, Varnish cardstock paper and items from the Gallivant and Beautiful You collections - loved the end result......

 

Using a piece of Varnish cardstock paper as the layout base, begin by heavily spritzing with Pewter mist.  Spread the mist around the paper with a brush and set aside to dry.  

Next, cut two 4"x5" matts for your 3" x 4"photo from the Gallivant patterned papers.  Position photo and matts at center of layout.  Adhere.

Lightly apply Pewter mist to all stickers.  Set aside to dry. 

Punch photo corners from a piece of Gallivant paper.  Set aside.

Determine placement of die cut shapes, twine, stickers, clips and lace around photo as shown.  Add a mini staple to some of your die cut shapes for added interest.  Adhere all.

Determine placement of photo corners at bottom of photo.  Adhere all.

Apply Pewter mist to chipboard letters and alphabet stickers,  Set aside to dry. Determine placement and adhere to layout.

 

 Your layout is done!

ATC's - Getting Easier!

I have to admit, ATC's are growing on me. At first I struggled with the small size (I figured ATC stood for ...  A Tough Challenge LOL!) and now I find it a great way to use bits and pieces leftover from other projects. I saved scraps from the last few projects I did for CHA Winter 2013. My first ATC was pretty simple. I layered two pieces of paper from Splash of Color's Cherish Collection by Christine Adolph. I cut a flower from one of the diecut sticker sheets, secured it with a bit of Washi Tape, added a sentiment, splashed some gesso on it and was done ...

My second ATC has a bit more layering. I used pieces from IOD's Cotswald Manor. My first two layers are background pieces from IOD's Devotion ATC Pack. Next, I tore a corrugated ATC background in half diagonally, painted it with gesso and used that as my next layer, I fussy cut some bits from a Cotswald Manor sticker sheet, layered them together, added a title and done ...

My final ATC is Holiday Themed. I wanted to create something for Easter and how easy is that when you used Splash of Color's Signature Collection ~ Easter Wishes. I started with a background ATC from the Loolah ATC Pack. I then layered a bright yellow piece from the Easter Wishes Collection, text paper from my stash and a ripped piece of corrugated ATC which I rubbed with Viva Colour Inka Gold in Steel Blue. I also rubbed the Inka Gold on the papers edges to add more color. I then cut an egg image from the collection, added Viva Colour German Glitter in Champagne to the flower centers.

NEW EASTER COLLECTION sneak-peek by Shelley Hamilton

Shelley, here, with another sneak-peak of one of our new collections! 

This one is our new signature EASTER Collection, and it is absolutely beautiful!  Check it out!!

 

In my layout, I used the Happiness paper for the background.  This paper is so bright and beautiful, and the back side of it has a chick basket motif that is adorable!  I used the back to make the bottom envelope!

For the middle envelope, I used the Easter Bunny paper.  Besides the back side having the beautiful yellow gingham look, the front side is full of pretty Easter pictures from times past.  It also has borders that can be used with any of the papers in the collection!  This paper is a win-win!!!  To accent this page, I used several papers from our 6"x6" Gingham paper pad.

I also used a Viva Colour Pearl Pen in Copper to make the purple flowers around the egg and the balloon come alive!

To finish off the envelopes, I used two tiny canvas flowers from the Monarch package of PAINT IT! with Luminarte flowers!  I painted these with Viva Colour Precious Metal Effect Paint in Purple!  This paint is so smooth and shiny that you will want it in every color!  Trust me!!  I added a piece of eye candy in the centers of the flowers to finish off this page!

Can I just say....How MUCH 
I enjoy creating ATC's!!!
The challenge...
to create a masterpiece
in a very small space!

 

I began my ATC by
distressing the edges
of a Kraft ATC.
I painted/rubbed on
Silks Acrylic Glaze
Olive Vine
Emperor's Gold
and a bit of 
Viva Colour ~ Inka Gold
Silver.

 

I then cut 8 Holly Leaves
from a piece of PaintIt!
Enchanted.
I then colored the leaves using
Twinkling H20's
Olive Vine
Sweet Alfalfa
Guatamalan
While wet I crumbled
the leaves.
I accented the leaves
with Viva Colour ~ Glitter Pen
Gold.
