I covered each side of the box with the paper that I liked.  I edged the box with purple ink.  I embellished the front with Viva Colour's Paper Pens in several colors.  I cut out a few sayings, and put them on some beautiful May Arts lace.

I tied some ribbon on the handle of the box, and it was done!

This project is for the Birthday Girl and her BFFs. Isn't it the most fun when everyone gets cute jewelry?

I even have some step by step pictures for the building of the B-day Girl pendant: 

The Mixapart pendant has a capsule that you can switch out with different desgins. I decided to use the whole base for the pendant instead of  working in the capsule. 

I filled the pendant with 3 layers of foam adhesive scrap (who says the circles are the only parts you can use?). 

From the Celebrate! paper collection I cut out a circle, this was from the B-day Cake page. Then I chose a phrase from the Fun Stripes page. The circle stuck to the foam adhesive underneath and I covered it with the words "B-day Girl" with the Viva Colour Perfect Pearl Pen Magic Transparent Blue. 

While it was drying, I decorated a metal cupcake charm with Paper Pens (Light Blue and Cream). 

Before the cupcake dried, I rubbed off some of the paint so the metal would show more. Either way is cute! Then I added some glitter to the bottom of the cupcake using a German Glitter Pen in Blue I glued some crystal chain around the outer edge of the circle, and gave the cupcake a Swarovski Crystal cherry. 

 At the bottom of the Mixapart base is a small opening that I sturng a ribbon through. With a bead cap and some more ribbon I made a tassle. 

 

Tie a knot with the ribbon that went through the hole, then fold down the ribbon and tie arond the tassle again so it with lay down. Add some jewelry findings if you want!

I sprayed the tassel ribbon and the ribbon strand with Radiant Rain. If you are trying to spray half the ribbon, like I did, roll it up first like a Sushi roll.  

I used Ocean Wave and Teal Zircon on one side then unrolled the ribbon and sprayed Pearl Blue all over to soften the effect. 

 What about the B-day party girls? They can make this simpler version as a party activity or give them as a favor. 

 These necklaces came in a kit with the base (a square bezel), a square dome to glue on top, and a chain. I used the same paper collection (Celebrate!) to find backgrounds and words. I also used the Viva Magic Transparent Pens to add sparkle.

Finally! I have some step by step photos of a project for you! The project started with a 6"x6" raw canvas book.

 

I used Viva Colour ~ modeling cream and stencils to put designs on each page.
 
 

Then I poured pink Radiant Rain (open up a mist bottle, use pourable or dabber) on the outter edge of each page. The raw canvas really soaks it up! Use water to help spread the color where you want it. 

Then I used teal Radiant Rain on the page near the spine.

With water, I blended the colors on each page. 

The inks blend beautifully! The stenciled patterns really pop when the color had been added. For the book, I chose images from my favorite collage paper, Vintage Risque Women! To get them to adhere well to surface, it is best to use an Acrylic Glaze Medium on both sides of the image. Gently burish it on the surface. 

All the cute phrases that make the "story" are from our Cardstock Stickers--Words. Help the eye follow along the story with a Viva Colour ~ Paper Pen.

Blazing Colors of Autumn and Inka Gold Metallic Rub.

Welcome to Happy Saturday. Where the colors of Autumn are just making their way into some parts of the world!! Because we dont have those blazing Autumnal colors in Florida where I live, I bring them to life in my work. And Splash Of Color allows me to do that with their gorgeous array of colors in their products!!!

Today, I wanted to concentrate on Viva Colour Inka Gold Metallic Rub. It is a wonderful product that can be used in a couple of ways. For this layout, I chose to spritz the pot with a little water and use it as a finger paint rubbing it all over the die cut flowers and Chip board.

 

Here is a closeup of the chip board that I finger painted using the Viva Colour Metallic rub in Lava Red. Inky fingers are wonderful with this product!! Once the rub was dry, within minutes, I used a Viva Colour Pearl Pen in Gold Pearl to create a little texture on the chipboard defining a flower here and there.

Here is a closeup of the flowers that I created. I used a red based pattern paper, rubbed the Viva Colour Metallic Rub in Lava Red on the petals, wrinkled them a bit, then lightly kissed them with Viva Colour Metallic Rub Base Coat in Gold and layered them and topped them off with a pearl that was also rubbed with the same metallic Rub.

The stamen that was punched from paper were also colored with the Viva Metallic Rub Base Coat in Gold.

The backround doily was also coored with Viva Colour Inka Gold Metallic Rub in Green. All the while I am finger painting.
I also dotted the punched border with some Viva Colour Pearl Pen in Gold Pearl. 

I did manage to sneak in a bit of Luminarte Silks acrylic glaze on this layout. I painted the butterflies in Apricot Nectar,  Sunflower, Sunburst, and Yellow Rose. The silks make it so easy to blend the colors one into the other. I did rub in a bit of the lava red metallic rub on the wings. Just to tie it into the rest of the layout.

Faux embossing and a Splash of Color!!

I am so very excited to have been asked to join the fabulous Splash Of Color Design Team!!! I find myself reaching for all of their fabulous products time after time. It was only natural that I accepted the invitation with honor! So for my first official DT project, I bring to you a layout on canvas, and a short tutorial on how I created the background.

I created the canvas background to look as if the canvas was embossed. And the shimmer of the Silks Acrylic Glazes and the Viva Inka Gold Metallic Rubs is unbelievablely beautiful!!

I touched up just about everything I used on this layout. The flowers and the chipboard were all rubbed with the Metallic rub as well as the some of the Silks.

Here is one of the clusters of flowers that were touched up with the Silks.

 

 TUTORIAL TO CREATE THE FAUX EMBOSSED CANVAS

To prepare your canvas, give it a good coat of gesso.

After it has dried, I die cut some leaves and embossed them with the matching embossing folder. I adhered them to the outer edges of the canvas with some craft glue.

Once they were adhered, I coated the whole canvas with a couple of coats of gesso, making sure the edges of the die cut leaves were sealed.

I covered the entire canvas using
Viva Colour Inka Gold Metallic Rub Base Coat - Gold Base Coat 

On top of that I added the Viva Colour ~ Inka Gold in green. To add a little more drama, I rubbed on some Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glaze in Pretty Peridot and Mallard using a small foam applicator and rubbing it into the edges of the raised leaves.

I used a little more of the Gold rub over the entire canvas to soften the spots there was to much green. It evens out the whole look of the color. I used a soft cloth to apply the rub.

Once the canvas was coated, the magic begins. I used different colors of Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glaze to give the canvas a bit of color. Because the glaze is transprent, you don't need a lot to add the  bit of color. I used a small sponge applicator to rub in the various colors into the canvas. The colors I used in this canvas piece were French Lilac, Plumeria, Celadon, and Snapdragon. There are so many color od Silks to choose from.

.....WHAT IF??!??!?

I spent last weekend at the
Beacon in Lincoln, NH
at a SCRAPPY EVENT.

Ohhh the fun I had!!
GREAT friends...
LOTS of laughs...
and TONS of creative time!!

When I stopped talking enough....
I created this little ditty!

The canvas was created around
this flower...

I had received a few pieces of
Canvas Corp ~ White Chipboard ~ Handmade Paper,
this is a VERY DENSE paper...
and I LOVE IT.

As the paper is so thick I had to use a steel ruled die,
I chose the Tattered Floral Die and cut various flowers.
I then stamped using
one of my all time favorite stamps
by Wendy Vecchi
and Archival Ink.

I decided I wanted to see how Primary Elements,
made into a "water color mixture" would work.
So......I pulled out various colored
Luminarte ~ Primary Elements and
a container of Bind and Resist
and proceeded to play with color....
testing to see how the paper would react....
can I say I LOVE IT!!! 

For the background
I smeared a bit of Amber Gold ~ Ferro Special Effect Paste
on the canvas, then 
I mixed a bit of Bolivian Blue Primary Elements
into the left over Amber Gold ~ Ferro Special Effect Paste
and smeared it on the canvas also. 

...a few Die~Namites diecut images cut from a bit of Linen Paper,
painted with Silk Acrylic Glazes.

Floral Canvas with LuminArte and Viva

Hello again!  I made this 6x8 canvas last week using Viva and LuminArte products.  First I laid down a thick coat of Viva Ferro in the bottom corner and stuck my Prima flowers in to it so as it dried, the flowers were permanently attached.  The next step was to apply a thick coat of Viva White Crackle Paint over the rest of the canvas using a palette knife, then I immediately applied the Zva Creative Rhinestone flourish on top of it so it would also permanently adhere.  The waiting began... it took several hours for the Crackle Paint to dry, but when it did, it left a pretty cool pattern of cracks all over the canvas.

After everything was dried and set, I used the LuminArte Silks paints on the canvas and on the flowers as a color base.  Stargazer Silks paint were used on the background and a few different colors were used on the flowers, mostly deep down in the cracks were the powders I used next wouldn't easily reach.

Then the fun really began!  Using a little aerosol hairspray as an adhesive and an eye shadow makeup brush, I worked on small sections at a time and worked the LuminArte Primary Elements Pigment Powders all over, which is what really amped up the shimmer and sparkle.  The beautiful thing about these pigment powders is that at first it looks nice, but the more your apply and layer the different colors, the more beautiful the project becomes!  You really can't mess anything up on a project when using them because if you don't like it, just add more!  This was my second canvas project using the pigments and I'm starting to get more of a feel for them.  I'm really looking forward to seeing how my usage for these amazing powders continues as I use them more and more.  I hope you like my project.  Stay tuned for more as I learn more!

Pumpkin....Pumpkin

It's that time of year....
The trees are full of color...
The corn has been cut...
and the Pumpkins and Mums
adorn many a porch and doorstep!

 And as is my yearly tradition...
I have created another Pumpkin!

I began with the Hallow's Eve 6 x 6 paper pad. 

I chose 4 of the papers....
and Altered Away!!

A bit of Cinnamon Brown ~ Luminarte Silk Acrylic Glaze
Golden Green ~ Viva Colour Ferro Special Effect Paste
through various Crafter's Workshop Stencils. 

Lots of Luminarte Silk Acrylic Glaze
and
Graphite ~ Viva Colour Ferro Special Effect Paste.

....how about a bit of Stone Effect Paste
mixed with a bit of Golden Nugget ~ Primary Elements
over some Bolivian Blue ~ Silk Acrylic Glaze
and Bronze ~ Viva Colour Precious Metal Effect Paint. 

When my pages were dry....
I tore them into pieces
and "collaged" them onto my pumpkin.

Here is a good view. 

I then colored a bit of May Arts Paper Raffia Ribbon
and wrapped it with a bit of jute around my pumpkin.

I proceeded to decorate my pumpkin
with Leafy Branch diecuts colored with
Olive ~ Viva Colour Precious Metal Effect Paint.

and the flowers
were colored with all kinds colors....
Luminarte ~ Radiant Rain Color Concentrate
and
Luminarte ~ Silk Acrylic Glaze.

Splash of Haunted via Heather

This year I wanted my Halloween crafts to have a theme: Poe. Edgar Allen Poe wrote some very haunting books and poems.
I love one of his most popular poems, The Raven. 

 Our papers and paints were perfect for my haunted house project. 

I used the Hallow's Eve collection.

I covered the roof and the inside floor with the super cute paper. 

For the outside of the house, I painted the paper mache a beautiful purple with LuminArte's Twinkling H2O's. When it was dry, I applied a coat of Viva Colour's Crackle Paint Base Coat. Finally, I applied Viva Colour's White Crackle Paint. In some places, I left a large glob of paint so I would get large cracks. 

I added a little orange Luminarte Silk Acrylic Glaze Ginger Peach around the windows to imply light was shinning inside. Keep in mind your color scheme for your projects. This house has only purple, orange, balck and white. 

Check out the Hallow's Eve Collection for the die cuts I used! 

For the characters I used stamps by Wendy Vecci, and I decorated with a variety of objects I was collecting. 

Special note:

I coved one side of the faux chandalier crystal with Viva Colour Inka Gold Orange

I added dimensition to the raven with a Viva Colour Pearl Pen in black. 

Its the perfect time to get a little spooky in your crafting. Enjoy! -heather

 

Guest Designer With My First Project!

My name is Melissa Papke and I currently work at Splash of Color!  Next month on November 8th, I will turn 51 years of age and I am almost 13 years crazy-happily married to my dreamboat of a husband, Brian.  We don't have human children but we do have two fur-babies, a girl and a boy, Toffee and Nugget.  I owned a Scrapbook store called The Scrapbook Garden (www.thescrapbookgarden.com) for 4 years here in Huntington Beach, but closed it over two years ago because of the downturn in the economy.  I currently still teach three classes a month for page layouts and cards at another local store here in Huntington Beach and I still host my two weekend retreats for 30-50 ladies up in the Big Bear Mountains.  I have actually been Scrapbooking since way back in high school (the late 1970s) when I made the first one for my high school sweetheart and I... mostly a collection of ephemera from our dates and photos of our school dances, but it's all in a scrapbook, so it counts!  Because I owned a store, I mostly did Scrapbooking and Card Making for the last several years, but lately I have found myself branching out in to many other kinds of crafting. I have enjoyed all kinds of crafting throughout my life: scrapbooking, painting, needlepoint, etc... and now, mixed media!  This is me:

The first project I'm posting today is something I've had in my noggin for about the last five years, but I don't drink alcohol and it took my Mom that long to send me enough of her wine corks so I could actually make it!  Here it is:

My sister lovingly named this piece for me:  "A Horse is a Horse, of Cork, of Cork... meet Mister Ed!"  Silly, I know, but it made me laugh and it kind of stuck!  The background is on a 36"x24" canvas-wrapped board and was collaged using Matte Gel with two different handmade papers I found at Art Supply Warehouse.  I then painted the entire background with some amazing colors from the LuminArte Silks Paints:  Honey Amber, Nutmeg, Chestnut Brown, and a little Cinnamon Brown thrown in for good measure!  Around the edges I used the Hematite Ferro Special Effects Paste for texture, let it dry, and then painted over it with Cinnamon Brown Silks Paint.  There are 230 wine corks in this piece!  That is a LOT of wine!  I made Mister Ed's eye out of polymer clay and painted it black.  The final touches on the mane and the foliage in the bottom right corner were purchased at Michael's in the floral section.  I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out considering it was my first foray in to crafting with corks, but I truly believe that the Silks Paints made all the difference in the way this looks! 

On a final note, if you get a quirky idea in your head, just make it!  Don't worry about how it will turn out... just put your creativity to work and try something new!  There's always a chance that something might not turn out like you imagined it, but there's also a chance that it might turn out amazing, but you'll never know if you don't take the chance.  Most importantly, just have fun and enjoy your time being creative.
