Splash of Journal Collage

 My favorite way to create has to be in a journal. My decisions for color, theme, technique, anything are up to my own whims. 

 Recently, I joined a journal "round robin." Its a sort of sisterhood of the traveling journal, except we all have our own journals. We each decorated our covers and I decorated the first 2-page spread. 

 I used collage papers designed by Marah Johson, and I especailly love the new Vamp ladies!

  I kind of cheated on this collage because the fancy lady was on a page with the French newspaper, the damask scroll, and some writing in the corners. But outlining the newspaper, I made it look like I added it, and by placing the Eiffle Tower where it it is there is a hint that I'm hiding a seam. I also used color to bring the girl forward.  Below you can see the only added pieces and the black is German foil. 

In place of the title page is the savage lady. For the background I used a Marah Johnson stencil of roses. The focal lady was a bit small for the page, so I built up a stage for her. I have painted book text and cardstock then built the collage pieces to reach outside the mats which all gave this small cut-out a much more substantial look. 

 

Close up you can see the heavy brass key and the dark German foil weighted down and gave a foundation to my lady. I love the overall effect!!

Butterflies and Silks Color my World!!

For those who know me, You know I just adore butterflies. They can lighten a project and just add a little beauty to your them. I have a butterfly file that I created, but the colors were not the vibrant blue/green I wanted. That is where Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glaze came to the rescue. I love how with just one light coat, the details of the butterflies still came through. 

 For the base coat I started with LuminArte Silks Acrylic Glaze in African Jade.

Then in selected areas I painted LuminArte Silks Acrylic Glaze in 2 different colors,  Celedon and Emerald. I used a touch of Periwinkle and Pink Anthurium. 

I also enhanced my flowers using the LuminArte Silks Acrylic Glaze. The pink is Pink Anthurium

and the blue flower was enhanced with Celedon and African Jade to match the butterflies.

I used the Cotswald Manor Collection from Splash of Color for my layout. It is absolutely gorgeous!!! I got a little inky with Silks for my splashes and splatters.

For my photoframes, I used 2 different Die-Namites dies and combined them for a beautiful frame. Rose Bouquet DN-1120, and Elegant Heart FrameDN-1127.

I just cut the bow off of the bottom of the Rose Bouquet and placed the flowers on the top of the Elegant Heart Frame and the bow portion on the bottom.

I fussy cut one of the pages of the paper and used it in the corner of my layout. I used Viva Colour Inka Gold Metallic Rub in Lava Gold for my Heart Frames and the buds on the Rose bouquets. Then I covered evrything with the Viva Colour Magic Transparent Perfect Pearl Pen. I colored the bow porion with Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glaze in African Jade. I also used African Jade as a color wash around the layout.

The butterflies are from Iron Orchid Designs Die Cut Shape pack. I just smeared some Viva Colour Magic Transparent Perfect Pearl Pen on them for shine.

Blazing Colors of Autumn and Inka Gold Metallic Rub.

Welcome to Happy Saturday. Where the colors of Autumn are just making their way into some parts of the world!! Because we dont have those blazing Autumnal colors in Florida where I live, I bring them to life in my work. And Splash Of Color allows me to do that with their gorgeous array of colors in their products!!!

Today, I wanted to concentrate on Viva Colour Inka Gold Metallic Rub. It is a wonderful product that can be used in a couple of ways. For this layout, I chose to spritz the pot with a little water and use it as a finger paint rubbing it all over the die cut flowers and Chip board.

 

Here is a closeup of the chip board that I finger painted using the Viva Colour Metallic rub in Lava Red. Inky fingers are wonderful with this product!! Once the rub was dry, within minutes, I used a Viva Colour Pearl Pen in Gold Pearl to create a little texture on the chipboard defining a flower here and there.

Here is a closeup of the flowers that I created. I used a red based pattern paper, rubbed the Viva Colour Metallic Rub in Lava Red on the petals, wrinkled them a bit, then lightly kissed them with Viva Colour Metallic Rub Base Coat in Gold and layered them and topped them off with a pearl that was also rubbed with the same metallic Rub.

The stamen that was punched from paper were also colored with the Viva Metallic Rub Base Coat in Gold.

The backround doily was also coored with Viva Colour Inka Gold Metallic Rub in Green. All the while I am finger painting.
I also dotted the punched border with some Viva Colour Pearl Pen in Gold Pearl. 

I did manage to sneak in a bit of Luminarte Silks acrylic glaze on this layout. I painted the butterflies in Apricot Nectar,  Sunflower, Sunburst, and Yellow Rose. The silks make it so easy to blend the colors one into the other. I did rub in a bit of the lava red metallic rub on the wings. Just to tie it into the rest of the layout.

Faux embossing and a Splash of Color!!

I am so very excited to have been asked to join the fabulous Splash Of Color Design Team!!! I find myself reaching for all of their fabulous products time after time. It was only natural that I accepted the invitation with honor! So for my first official DT project, I bring to you a layout on canvas, and a short tutorial on how I created the background.

I created the canvas background to look as if the canvas was embossed. And the shimmer of the Silks Acrylic Glazes and the Viva Inka Gold Metallic Rubs is unbelievablely beautiful!!

I touched up just about everything I used on this layout. The flowers and the chipboard were all rubbed with the Metallic rub as well as the some of the Silks.

Here is one of the clusters of flowers that were touched up with the Silks.

 

 TUTORIAL TO CREATE THE FAUX EMBOSSED CANVAS

To prepare your canvas, give it a good coat of gesso.

After it has dried, I die cut some leaves and embossed them with the matching embossing folder. I adhered them to the outer edges of the canvas with some craft glue.

Once they were adhered, I coated the whole canvas with a couple of coats of gesso, making sure the edges of the die cut leaves were sealed.

I covered the entire canvas using
Viva Colour Inka Gold Metallic Rub Base Coat - Gold Base Coat 

On top of that I added the Viva Colour ~ Inka Gold in green. To add a little more drama, I rubbed on some Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glaze in Pretty Peridot and Mallard using a small foam applicator and rubbing it into the edges of the raised leaves.

I used a little more of the Gold rub over the entire canvas to soften the spots there was to much green. It evens out the whole look of the color. I used a soft cloth to apply the rub.

Once the canvas was coated, the magic begins. I used different colors of Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glaze to give the canvas a bit of color. Because the glaze is transprent, you don't need a lot to add the  bit of color. I used a small sponge applicator to rub in the various colors into the canvas. The colors I used in this canvas piece were French Lilac, Plumeria, Celadon, and Snapdragon. There are so many color od Silks to choose from.

Kicked Up Kraft

Hi there..It is me, Lisa again sharing another layout I created for my Guest Design Spot. Who knew that Kraft paper could be so darn beautiful just by adding a little bit of Splash of Color!! Ok I added a whole lot of Splashes of Color!! To start off, I edged punch a 12x12 piece of plain old Kraft card stock. Added a not of soft inking using a mask around the perimeter of the paper. I then used Viva Colour ~ Inka Gold Metallic Rub in Copper and Gold and rubbed around the inside edges all around the page. I did a bit of sewing as well.

I die cut a tag using Sizzix Tag and Bookplate die. I cut 2 pieces. One in Kraft paper the other in thin chipboard. I ran the kraft tag through my machine with a Sizzix Embossing folder. I sewed around the perimeter of the tag. Using the same 2 Inka Gold colors, I lightly rubbed them over the embossed parts of the tag. Then I adhered the embossed tag to the chipboard making it nice and sturdy. I used a cream colored seam binding and colored it with Silks Acrylic Glaze in Nutmeg adding a spray of water to blend it into the ribbon. When the ribbon was dry, I rubbed in some more of the Inka Gold in Copper and Gold to give it a bit of a varigated look. It came out gorgeous.The die cut swirl on the tag was rubbed with Inka Gold in Copper. No primer needed.

I created a Mat for my photo. Using a 1 inch foam brush, I painted the perimeter of white cardstock with Viva Crackle Base Coat For Porous Surfaces. When it was dried I then brushed on Viva Colour Crackle in white. When that was dry and crackles, I rubbed on some Silks Acrylic Glaze in Nutmeg and Apricot Nectar. 

Here is just a close up of the embossed tag. I added some tiny dots inbetween the diamonds with a Viva Colour Pearl Pen in Gold. The Blue Fern Studios Butterfly was primed with some white gesso. Then it was painted with Silks Acrylic Glaze in Apricot Necter and Plumaria. Oh the colors are so so beautiful and rich!! It was then topped off with the Viva Colour Pearl Pen in Gold.

Another piece of Blue Fern Studios Chip board was primed and painted the same way with the same colors as the butterfly.

The flowers were die cut from white Mulberry paper. They were painted with Silks Acrylic Glaze in Apricot Nectar, Coral Berry and Plumeria. They were topped with a pearl and surrounded with dots created with Viva Colour Pearl Pen in goal. The leaves were all die cut from Kraft paper and rubbed with Inka Gold in Green/Yellow then lightly kissed with Silks Acrylic Glaze in Olve vine and when dry, rubbed with Inka Gold in Gold and Copper.

Guest Designer and a Layout

Hi, My name is Lisa Gregory and by profession I am a registered nurse. I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have 2 children who are now successful young adults.  I have been a crafter my whole life. I sew, embroider, crochet, paint and have dabbled in many crafty things in my life. Back in 2005, when my son was doing his senior project with his girlfriend (who is now his wife) They were creating a scrapbook of their lives. They elicited my help as I was the crafty one. We took a ride to The Dollar Tree (our local dollar store) who had a section dedicated to scrap booking....papers, albums, embellishments, flowers, and we grabbed everything we could find. I knew about the new way of scrap booking, but never gave it any thought until that trip to The Dollar Tree. After helping the kids create their albums , which by the way turned out fabulous, I was curious as to where I could get more "scrap booking stuff". So I drove to our local Michaels and Joanns craft stores. That is when I became hooked. Then I sought out the local scrapbook stores and found stuff I didn't even know existed until then. I shopped and shopped and shopped some more. I found Scrapbook.com and saw the kind of scrap booking the artists did. I was amazed at the styles. It just wasn't cut and paste and stickers. It was 3 dimensional, it was gorgeous, and oh so inspiring. So I created a gallery, created my first layout and the rest is history. My style has changed a bit throughout the years, but playing with paper and scissors is still so therapeutic for me. I am so incredibly honored that Cheryl invited me to be Guest Designer for Splash Of Color. 

I have been using the Splash Of Color products for quite some time and absolutely them. I have accumulated quite the arsenal of Silks Acrylic Glaze, and you will find me using them in almost all of the projects I create. I especially love them to color the flowers and leaves I create for my projects.

I created the flowers using the cream piece of 12x12 card stock. 1 sheet made all of the flowers and leaves as well as the flourishes. I used Splash Of Color Silks Acrylic Glaze to color the flowers. I used Silks Acrylic Glaze in Fuzzy Peach, Nutmeg and Coral Berry and rubbed the petals with Inka Gold Metallic Rub in Old Silver after the Silks was dry. Then I used Silks Acrylic Glaze in Pretty Peridot and  Viva Decor ~ Inka Gold Metallic Rub in Yellow/green to color the leaves. The flowers were die cut from one of Sizzix  Susans Garden dies. The middles were created with a little brown Flower Soft and Splash of Color Pearl Pen in Copper Pearl.



The frame was die cut with a Sizzix die, and painted with Splash Of Color Crackle Paint in white. It is amazing and dries shiny!! Then it was rubbed with a very light coat of Silks Acrylic Paint in Nutmeg using a foam applicator and rubbing it into the frame. Because the crackle dries shiny, the paint sunk into the cracks and left a light coat on the crackle. I love the look.

I used some texture paint mixed with a little gesso to thin it out and spread it over the Prima mask using a wide palette knife. Then I rubbed more of the Silks Acrylic Glaze in Nutmeg watered down a bit over the dried stones. Then I stippled just a little more over the stones when they were dry.  Using a charcoal pencil I outlined each stone for definition. 

The flourish is another Sizzix die cut using the same crackle technique as on the frame.

Here is just another view of the cluster of flowers I created and colored with the absolutely fabulous Silks Acrylic Glaze.

I did a little color spattering on the background using Silks Acrylic Glaze in Fuzzy Peach and Black Ice by flicking the paint off of a brush.

Mix it Up by Donna Bryant!!!

Hey Scrappers, Donna here again today so lets "Mix it Up" !!!  

For today's layout, I’ve mixed a piece of corregated cardboard, Twinkling H20s and papers from the Beautiful You, Awkward Family and Samantha Walker’s Tea Party collections. And oh!  There are some Paint It! word stickers, ribbon, a half piece of a zipper, lace, and buttons thrown in to today’s “mix” as well  .  

Here is our "Mix it Up" layout for today:

 

And here are your instructions:

Tear a piece of corregated cardboard to approximately 6" x 2".  Paint "ribbed" area heavily with Luminarte Solar Gold Twinkling H20s.  

Determine what photo size you will be using on your layout (I used a wallet size) and cut a white matt for the photo, making the matt size approximately 1/4" larger than your photo size.   Heavily paint the matt with Luminarte Solar Gold Twinkling H20s.  

Choose two (2) word stickers from the Devotion Words (I used "giddy" and "together").   Paint lightly with Luminarte Pink Azela Twinkling H20s.   Set aside to dry.

Select the design of Awkward Family Photos 12 x 12 paper to use as your layout base - you will need two (2) of the same - and set aside.  I used "Awkward Love".  The papers in this line can serve double duty here as they will serve as your page title and layout base at the same time! 

Punch five (5) hearts from the Beautiful You papers.  Set aside.

Punch two (2) photo corners from the Tea Party Floral Plaid paper.  Set aside. 

Punch or cut out  the layout base sentiment from the top, left portion of a piece of Awkward Family 12 x 12 paper and set aside (I punched the "Certified Awkward" circle.  Set aside.

Select a piece of paper from the Beautiful You papers and cut a piece approximately 1" larger than your photo. Use an edge punch to create a decorative edge on this piece.  Adhere this piece behind your matted photo and adhere the matted photo (do not put glue on bottom half of photo) to the center of the cardboard piece.

Determine placement of cardboard (the photo is already on it), four (4) hearts, two (2) photo corners, lace, ribbon, zipper. buttons, and stickers at bottom of layout and adhere to layout base.  Adhere sentiment piece to layout base with foam tape over the same area of your laout base.  (I used "Certified Awkward").  

 

Stitch buttons.

Wrap twine around bottom edge of photo and attach at right, layout edge with staple. Adhere one (1) punched heart over twine.

You know, you may want to try another one of this design to lay vertical on your page.   Fun!!

Fun...fun...fun in less than 30 minutes!

Good morning!  Today is another  feature showing an easy way to create a layout in less than 30 minutes, for those of you who are on a time crunch.  I love stickers...and I love being creative with stickers....and this Studio Basics 101 collection called Kidoodle is perfect and pure fun for this very simple page.

I took the pink patterned/word paper from the collection and found 4 wallet-sized black and white photos.  I love to place my photos on the page first, in this example, a little off center.  I leave a little space between the photos to keep them from separate and to detract from the busy-ness of the patterned paper.  I also matted the photos in a larger white matte cardstock for that same purpose.  I then joined all four photos together with a large journaling sticker found in the 5X13 Kiddoodle Girl sticker sheet.  Those stickers are just way, way too cute...and so fun and girlie.

I embellished the large journaling sticker with other stickers on the sticker sheet and then surrounded my photos with various stickers and alphabets.   This page came together so quickly.  Take advantage of the stickers in all the Splash of Color paper collections.  They really are the finishing touches on a fun page.

Family Fun

Sometimes, I love to play with different paper strips and use them as a background on my page.  I typically choose a few different patterned papers - especially the double sided ones - cut different size strips in different widths and lengths, and then layer them in the back of my photo(s).  This is a great way to create a layout from your scrap pieces as well.

It gets even better if you have long stickers to mix in, like the chop stickers I used on this layout, created using Samantha Walker's Kokeshi collection.

Mix in some frayed canvas strips (or ribbons and/or trim) with your paper strips to add some texture to your page.  Matt your photo with them too!!

Layer in a few epoxy stickers - I used flowers and placed brads in their centers, placed some fans around the right side of my photo and  then added some buttons and the layout was complete!!
