Parts & Parcels Week!
I’m so excited to share Parts & Parcels with you this week! We have some great Design Team pieces to spice up the blog this week too! I wanted to start out the week by telling you a little bit about the invention of the Parts & Parcels line. A real look at design idea to production through a designer’s eye.
Back in 2005 I decided that I wanted to do something with this idea of paper engineering. I am an artist by education but I have a designer’s love of invention. I played around with scrapbooking for a while as a hobby while my girls were babies. Because of my fine art training, it came easy to me and was a great way to document my many baby pictures. My pages and memory projects always had little pockets or interactive elements in them and in 2005 I decided to write a book. To make a long story a little shorter, I accepted a contract with Quarry Books and wrote “Pockets, Pullouts and Hiding Places”. While this book was written for the scrapbooker, it was also written for the paper artist, the cardmaker, altered book makers, calligraphers, and anyone else who liked to mix interactive elements into their work. I am an equal opportunity designer!
One thing lead to another and I started writing two more books with my good friends Linda Blinn and Jennifer Francis Bitto (Paper Art Workshop Series: Handmade Gifts and Celebrating Baby). But the idea of taking the elements of Parts and Parcels and turning them into a product kept haunting me so I started working up a prototype. I eventually got up the nerve and the time to present my idea to Creative Imaginations. Thankfully they were as excited about the project as I was.
As I worked on the Parts & Parcels line I tried to continue to keep all consumers in mind. In the end, I developed a product that packed a lot of wow into a fairly small package. By using the album, a brand new scrapbooker could quickly and easily get through their piles of photos, or an experienced scrapbooker/paper artist could have a ball with all their usual tricks like embellishments, stamping, painting, and altering.
Because this post will be followed by some other posts with some fabulous work of our design team, I decided to start our week off with my guest designer. This is a large flip flop folio by Becky Mason {my daughter}. For a 3rd grade school assignment the children were instructed to visit on eof many Boston area landmarks (or museums) and create a final project/report. Becky knew she couldn't just make a poster or some boring old project! She asked for a Flip Flop Folio and I grabbed a bunch of supplies for her and she basically made this all by herself. (I helped cut some of the pink paper only because there wasn't alot of it and we had to get it all out of one sheet.) She was so proud of her accomplishment and I am too! Holiday Kits!
Recently I visited my local store Right at Home Scrapbooking and fell in love with a couple of Holiday kits created by two super talented designers, Danielle Flanders and Roree Rumph.

I sure hope nobody comes knocking at my door!
My home is looking a lot like a bomb went off! Maddy and I have been die cutting maniacs getting ready for my holiday classes, so over 500 dies have been cut, over a 1000 blank chipboard pieces have been punched out and sorted, and hundreds of brads have been pulled from their cards, sorted bagged and packed. Still Hundreds more dies need to be cut....
This is not a very glamorous moment in the Johnson house. I have no "room of my own" in our new house so I am constantly taking over the living room, much to the dismay of Kennedy my "Everything in it's place kind of girl". She appears to holding her head on her shoulders, because my mess makes her brain hurt! Note Maddy's glass of milk on the table, "To keep her strength up." She has done MOST of the die cutting. She has earned her keep these past couple of days. I have to keep reminding them that the faster we work the quicker it get cleaned back up again!
I am teaching this weekend up in Huntington beach at the Scrapbook Garden, 12 projects in 2 hours....I am sure being highly caffeinated will very helpful.(there are a few spaces left in this class)

I love to decorate, cook, make fun gifts and see the joy in my children’s faces as the holiday gets closer.
Bazzill cardstock Snowflake ornament Directions Cut cardstock to 6x12 and score in half in the center. Cut 21346 Art Warehouse Mistletoe double sided paper to 5 ½ x 5 ½ and ink edges and adhere to folded cardstock. Cut 21331 Art Warehouse Hollyberry double sided paper to 2 x 6 and ink edges. Mount to cardstock measuring 2 ½ x 6 and place slightly off center toward the bottom of the card. Holiday Cards - Day Three

I was looking through old Christmas cards the other day while at my mom's house over Thanksgiving and was really admiring my mother's collection of older, more vintage styled cards and was inspired to create a card of my own once at home using some of those vintage cards as my inspiration.

Cardstock Ribbon Yarn sewing machine thread pigment ink gold embossing powder
Tools Needed
paper trimmer distressing tool heat gun (for embossing) clear stamp block sewing machine Directions
1. Cut a piece of cardstock to measure 5 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and fold in half.
2. Cut a red piece of cardstock to measure 3 1/4 X 3 1/2 inches and a piece of the patterned Tinsel Town cardstock cardstock to measure 3 x 3 1/4 inches and mat the patterned paper to the red cardstock.
3. Using your sewing machine, stitch a border around the Tinsel Town cardstock.
4. Using a pigment ink (I used Versamark) stamp the word "Joy" onto your Tinsel Town Cardstock, adding embossing powerder {i used gold} and heat with heating tool.
5. Using a glue dot, add your Eye Candy Swarovski gemstone to the top of your tree.
6. Cut a length of ribbon to measure 6 inches and using your scissors, cut a notch into one end and adhere ribbon to the middle of your card.
7. Adhere your square of cardstock and patterned paper that you stamped on over the top of the ribbon.
8. Tie a length of yarn (measuring approximately 15 inches or so) to the top of your card and finish by tying a pretty bow!

Holiday Cards - Day Two
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

Christmas is my favorite time of year. I love the traditional colors of the new Art Warehouse Christmas lines. They are elegant and timeless and perfect for any craft project. This card is full of texture and shine and reflects my style. I look forward to giving this card to a special person this season.

Directions
1. Cut a piece of 8.5" x 11" white cardstock to 8.5" x 5.5" and fold in half, so your card is 4.25" x 5.5". Ink the edges with brown ink.
2. Cut a 4" x 5.25" piece of the Noel Dear Santa paper and ink the edges with brown ink. I cut mine so there is a red flourish at the top.
3. Adhere the Noel Dear Santa paper piece to the center of your white card.
4. Hand or machine stitch with red thread around the Noel Dear Santa paper on the white card.
5. Punch out the bird from the Felicity chipboard and cut off the piece just under the branch at the bottom.
6. Using a foam brush, paint a generous amount of mod podge to the top of the bird chipboard.
7. While it's still wet, sprinkle it with silver glitter and set it aside to dry.
8. From the center of the Mistletoe Text die cut paper, cut a 9.25" x .05" strip.
9. Fold the paper back and forth like a fan every 0.25".
10. Gently bring the two ends together and adhere with wet glue or a glue dot. Add a glue dot in the center and push it together. You should now have a nicely folded flower.
11. Punch a 1" circle. Rub on "Holiday Memories" and the snowflake from the Noel swatchpack.
12. Add glitter to the edges of the circle and set aside to dry.
13. Working down from the upper left corner of your card, add the holly trim rub-on from the Noel swatchpack, then "The Most" from the Hollyberry swatchpack, then "Wonderful" from the Hollyberry swatchpack, and then "Time of the Year" from the Hollyberry swatchpack.
14. Place the holly border journaling sticker from the Noel Sticker sheet horizontally just under "Time of the Year" on your card.
15. Rub on a red flourish in the bottom left corner of the holly border journaling sticker from the Hollyberry swatchpack.
16. Give your bird an eye by adhering the red crystal.
17. Adhere your circle to the top of your flower.
18. Adhere your flower to the right side of your bird.
19. Adhere your bird to the center of your holly border journaling sticker.
