Little fallen nest by artist Betsy Roberts

Today we have Betsy Roberts showing us a mix-media project using Radiant Rains and the Twinkling H20's. I really like the contrast with the wood and fabric in her piece. Oh....and the fact that it would look perfect in my house. Enjoy!

I had a fun time with this fabric tree on a wooden canvas.  I painted the canvas with Radiant Rains Solar Gold and Twinks .  Then I cut the fabric tree and use Steam2Seam to adhere it to the wooden canvas.  

Next, I used Viva dimensional Paint Pens in Gold Pearl, Transparent Red Glitter, Dark Orange pen to create leaf-like items on the tree and dimension between the branches.

Then I cut out of Creative Imaginations new ATC goodies the bird and next along with the wonderful words they have.......LOVE THAT COMPANY!!!! and adhered them to the wood canvas.

I used the Viva Pearl Dimensional paint to add eggs to the nest and under the head of the bird, once I cut it apart.  This was to help with more dimension.

Artist Trading Card

Hello Everyone, Lynn Kopas  (designer for CI) here with some ATC Cards using Luminarte Paints and Paint It Papers. I must admit - these were my first EVER ATC Cards. I have never created any project on a canvas this small. After much procrastinating I decided to treat each card as a small mixed media canvas and it came together quite nicely. I came up with this idea one night when I couldn't get to sleep and started in on it the next day. I've been on a "bird" kick lately and definitely on a mixed media kick so I treated each ATC card like a larger canvas. I paper collaged each card with papers from IOD's Devotion collection using the 6x6 paper pads. I then covered the card with a light coat of translucent white paint. I stamped on the painted background and added some rub-ons. I wondered how Luminarte Radiant Rain would mix with modeling paste ... so I experimented. This is how I created the dimensional branches ... (if you click on this photo you will really seen the dimension)

 
The birdies were traced onto Paint It Paper and then covered with Olive Vine Twinkling H20's - one of my go-to colors. I then inked the edges for more definition and added a wing - from the opposite side of the Paint It paper.

 
For the center card I crunched little pieces of tissue paper to fill a small chipboard heart and dabbed it with Poppy Red Twinkling H20's...

" Caged Grace" by Marah Johnson

Beautiful, elegant, creative and clever are words to describes Marah's "Caged Grace" art piece. This is an original handmade birdcage mounted on a vintage book cover that has been painted with Luminarte Radiant Rains. The cage is made from aged bailing wire so it has a nice aged patina to it, along with a bit of the coppery-brown color from the cage....which adds age to the charm.



And now Marah will tell us a little about the process that she went through to create her "Caged Grace".

  I started with some gesso, a book cover and some wire.
 

Then, I cut words from books....and covered them in a layer of Modge Podge.

Put the butterfly in the middle....she is made of feathers and landed in my collection years ago....

Used the strips of words as part of the cage "wire"....those blobs of white are blobs of matte Modge Podge drying....making the strips more secure and thicker so that they are less delicate.

I added a bit of sewn ruffle made from vintage dress pattern tissue (going to be selling ruffle by the yard).

Added beads for feet and a bit of Luminarte Radiant Rain  to finish it off... super happy with it (honestly I am going to have a hard time selling her, but I think she needs to fly off and inspire some one, her ETSY listing is here)....I think I am going to make a series of them!

I am so excited to get to introduce Betsy! She is a very well known in her industry as a Gourd Artist. Mix-media is her specialty with her gourds! Anything could be used when it comes to her art pieces. They are so vibrant, unique, beautiful, inspiring and they seem to have a soul of their own when she is done creating them. She likes to use things in her art work that the average person would just walk by or throw out as trash. If your stars in life ever get to line up and you get to take one of her classes or a chance to meet her, you will be in for a treat! She is as down to earth as the gourds she creates and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us!

Somewhere in my life I realized it was time to play and have some fun.  Art classes, well.... I have NO experience with Art Education at all.  In high school I signed up for one beginning class and the first day the teacher politely told me, " I should go into sciences or math as I had no artist ability at all.!"  Needless to say that paralyzed me from venturing into any type of art or craft until I was 55 and decided it was time to have a hobby.

Even though he told me I had no ability, I have collected art (and a LOT of it) since I was 19 years old.  I love color, the imagination, creativity someone had to create such enjoyable items for my home.

  I started playing with Gourds in 2005 - finally it was time in my life to have a hobby.
 
Off I went to Portland Oregon to work with my Favorite Uncle Bob and learn to turn wood, since that was "manly and didn't require lots of art ability", so I thought.  Well, my husband  also decided that is what                                 Red Kimono
he wanted to do and of course wouldn't work for me with both of us to do the same hobby.

So, my dear uncle Bob, a master craftsman of many abilities, was also a decorative painter.  Thought I would try that!!!  Well, got there and he had built me a beautiful wood tray, had the pattern and  my 6 colors of paint all lined up and ready for me to begin.  Of course, I didn't like any of the colors and was promptly told, "that is what the pattern called for and I needed to do what the pattern required."   Finished that as soon as I could, not a bad job at all I might say (snuck in a few extra color touches when he wasn't looking).  Then I wanted to know what I could paint next..... the next opened my life up to the world of gourds.

He handed me a gourd, which again I painted from a pattern and then asked what else I could do with this very organic, cool item.  He showed me a book on Gourding and I was smitten!!!  I knew I had found something I would truly enjoy as they don't have to be painted with a pattern at all if you don't want.

I went to the gourd farm by my home that Thanksgiving and found some gourds, still not having the confidence to know what I could do with them.  Finally almost two years later, I took my first gourd class and was in love!!

You use mini jigsaws, sanders, drills, carvers, oh yeah.......paints, wood dyes, embellishments... basically anything your heart desires you can do with a gourd.

I was featured artist at the Folsom Gourd and Art festival my third year of gourding and I asked her, "why me?"  Her reply was, "you are so different from other gourd artists, use so much color and are "out of your box".  I realize I am totally different from most gourd artists as when I teach I do not teach patterns, but encourage everyone to create a one of a kind, out of their heart and soul piece, that is truly from their "artistic box".

I found Luminarte paints by accident and have been in love with their products since.  I teach many classes with the Radiant Rains, either the daubers or the mists.  I LOVE THE PRODUCT!!!  From someone who doesn't have any art background and loves to play, this is the product line                              Turquoise Treasure for them and of course ME!    I use the paints in almost all my projects as I love the hint of shimmer or the massive shimmer I can create with the line.  I am working more and more with the Twinkling H2O's and found a new love......yeah for me!!!

I teach at my home in San Diego, have taught in Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Texas and many places in California.   I am always open to playing and trying new things......sometimes they work and sometimes it will take me on a whole new journey.

WOW!!!  I love my job!!  The weekend is here so get out your Luminarte paints and get painting! Finish a project, or start a new one.....maybe try painting a gourd!
