Artist Jodi Ohl is keeping the Fall theme with her post today. She always amazes me with what she mixes with our Splash of Color products!
It's Jodi here, and I have a great little fall collage project for you to share using a variety of products from Splash of Color. With Labor Day just behind us, it's the unofficial start to Fall so why not cozy up to the fire in our studios...or pretend there is a fire to cozy up to, grab a sweater (or apron) and let's get messy!
In this project, you'll see I created a collaged canvas using assorted scrapbook papers in warm tones along with some script paper. This is a good time to use up your stash! Additionally, I added some washi tissue tape for the base. My adhesive of choice lately has been Golden's Heavy Body Gel Medium. You'll find that when you use a medium that is heavier, you have less issues with bubbles in your collage because it contains less water. Using a brayer to adhere your collage papers helps in elminating any of those pesky bubbles as well.
I don't have tell you about all the amazing colors Silks Acrylics has in their line up, several of which are perfect for the fall. In this project I chose a palette that was rusty and warm, with a touch of grunge.
Silks Acrylics: Emperor's Gold, Coral Berry, Honey Amber, Teal Zircon, and my favorite...Olive Vine Green.
Who doesn't love texture? I've always loved to use modeling paste in my work, but since I've discovered Viva's Modeling Creme, it has become my medium of choice. This is especially so when I want to work fast because the modeling creme dries VERY quickly. Within an hour or less and my stenciled on designs using the modeling creme (in gold) were all dry. You can also use punchinella for a fun alternative to traditional stencils.
After your texture layer is dry, start adding light washes of glazes. Allow each layer to dry before adding (random) washes of additional colors. With glazes, you can intensify the colors by either layering color over a different color or adding 2-3 coats of the same color. The colors underneath shine through each layer, and as you build up your layers, they almost glow.
I also toned down various spots with a bit of gesso. You'll notice that while the gesso is white, when applied atop the glazes, it reconstitutes the glazes and a bit of color tints the gesso. I like that look for this project as I was trying to 'faux' age and grunge the piece.
You can finish the piece by adding a focal point of your choice (photo or other embellishment). For this project, I found a huge maple leaf that had fallen. It was still green so it was flexible enough to paint without 'falling' a part. I added modeling creme first to 'preserve it' then glazed over with the background colors once dry.
I adhered the leaf using spray adhesive. *Be sure not to speed dry with a heat gun. This will shrivel the leaf. Trust me on this one. :)
Final touches can include stenciled wording (Viva's Ferro Paste in Graphite), stickers and oh heck...why not...more paint splatters.
