June has just flew by! Before we get into what Christine posted for the day. I wanted to THANK our Guest Artist Dorit Elisha for her wonderful inspiring tutorials she shared with us.  Also, to see more of her artwork visit her at Life as a Five Ring Circus.  We hope she keeps us informed of what she is doing with our products and hope she will come back, as a Guest Artist, in the future. Today's post is from Christine form Scrap Time. She is using a lot of Creative Imaginations products that works great with the Luminarte paints. Did you know that we carried Stencils and Banana Leaf papers? You may also incorporate these techniques and products into your mix-media projects. Hope you enjoy them!

Christine here, I am showing you a variety of products from Creative Imaginations!! First off, they created a line of Gingham Papers, that come in a variety of colours! One side has a small gingham pattern, the other side is a bit larger. They also have introduced a collection of Stencils. These are designed to work with each of their paper collections! Of course you can spray the stencils with the Luminarte Radiant Rain Mists. The sprays have been improved and a new no-clog formula.

They also introduced a collection of Banana Leaf papers. On my layout I sprayed mists on the papers, as well as did my journalling on the papers.

I was very excited to see all of these different textures that Creative Imaginations now offers. They have Corrugated papers in Kraft, black, blue, brown, white, silver; as well as chipboard in a white finish; canvas in white and natural and metallic papers. You can spray these with the Radiant Rains, paint them with the Luminarte dabbers or with the H2O’s! So fun for mixed media projects!

Another fun product is their Paint It papers. Again, these coordinate with their various collections. The papers have a black resist on a white paper. You can spray or paint the papers. I like to use my H2O’s so I have more control over where the colour is placed.

Shimmer, Shine….Embellish!

Joanne here, with all the sparkle color products from Luminarte, you have the perfect tool box for creating one of a kind original artworks.  I prefer to make my own embellishments and decorations for my journals, cards and mixed media pieces.  It’s so relaxing and therapeutic for me creating these art treasures.  Let yourself play and experiment with your products, and create a stock pile of embellies to use in later projects.  They're such fun to make!

My favorite technique is drawing with dimensional paints and filling them in with the light catching Twinks and Radiant Rains.  This approach takes the art of stamping/coloring up a notch by free hand drawing your own images. 

“BLING IT EMBELLIES”

 Here's a step by step to make your own embellishments for your mix media pieces, art collage, art journaling, scrapbooking and card making.

MATERIALS:

• Twinks, Radiant Rains, Daubers in assorted colors

• Inkssentials Enamel Accents (black and white), Glossy Accents, Stickles all from Ranger. 

1. DO THE DOODLES:  On plain white cardstock, use a light colored pencil, draw your images such as hearts, flowers, words, etc.  You are the artist, just draw until you like it! Do. Not. Stress.
2. POP, GOES YOUR ARTWORK! Trace over your design outlines with Inkssentials Enamels, Glossy Accents or Stickles.  It’s important to let them dry overnight.

3.COLOR ME TWINKS: When completely dry, paint in the designs with your rich, creamy, sparkly Twinks or use the Rains as paint.
4. FOR BIG COLOR: Use Radiant Rains straight from the bottle!  The color is so intense and adds boldness to the embellishments. Carefully remove the cap and pour into a plastic paint palette.  I use the same palette for my Luminarte exclusively.

5. BRUSHING UP: Use a paint brush to apply the the Rains from your palette.

Outlines: Glossy Accents

 

Outlines: Enamel Accents WHITE

 

Outlines: Enamel Accents BLACK

Outlines: Stickles DIAMOND color  

6. CUT. IT. OUT.!  Cut out your creations and add to your art collage, scrap layouts, and mixed media pieces.

...or just leave them whole as a piece to add to a card front or journal page.

7. BLING IT ON BABY!  For that over the top sparkle give your embellies a spritz of Radiant Rains in Egyptian Gold, my favorite!  Gently dab the outlines with a kleenex to remove excess Rains.

There is nothing more gratifying than showcasing your own original creative expressions.  Draw, scribble, write, and then paint with the intense sparkle that most unique to Luminarte.  Have fun!

Confessions of a Doodler

 


I'm Dawn DeVries Sokol, author of Doodle Diary: Art Journaling for Girls, 1000 Artist Journal Pages, and the upcoming Doodle Sketchbook: Art Journaling for Boys. I posted a video here using Radiant Rain misters and daubers in my art journal (last month).

And I have a confession:

 
I am a doodle-holic.

How does one become a doodle-holic? Funny thing is, I was never really a huge doodler while growing up. I was told I was the writer in the family; my brother was the artist. I did like drawing bubble letters and such, but nothing too extreme. When I had a pen in hand, it was usually to write in my handwriting I hated. After receiving a degree in journalism, working as an art director for major magazines, and designing books for various publishers across the country, I finally allowed myself to encourage my creativity. Yes, I was working in a creative field, but rarely did I create for myself.

I came upon a paper crafting store in a Phoenix suburb, and began taking workshops there and attending art retreats such as Artfest. After a couple years of dabbling in polymer clay, soldering, and other artistic pursuits, I found art journaling. Within the art journal, I began to doodle.

It started innocently enough, with doodles over collage to finish off pages and make them my own. But soon after that I was doodling over—gasp!—empty, white pages and filling them edge to edge with my doodles and words. I would sit in front of the TV and doodle televised events, such as concerts and football games.

 
At that point, my journal pages were primarily doodles. Cut to a few years later, and doodles still dominate my pages. I consider my lettering part of my doodling. I still fill up my pages edge to edge with doodles and words, although I'm trying to mix it up a bit.

  

Nowadays, I paint the backgrounds of my pages first, do some collage, and then doodle as my last stage. In fact, last year I wrote a series of articles for Cloth Paper Scissors magazine and then shot a DVD workshop for CPS and Interweave called “Art Journaling: Pages in Stages” to help others looking for a stress-free approach to journaling.

Lately, I’ve been integrating Twinkling H2Os and Radiant Rain paints into my art journals. I love spraying them around on the page, using them with a brush, and stenciling with them as well. They create some awesome effects! I brought them with me to Cloth Paper Scissors’ Create Retreat in Costa Mesa, CA, last month to show my students the great backgrounds they can achieve with them on their pages. We had such a blast! They’re perfect for my Seen it on the Street Journal that I taught because the journal is full of splotches and splatters:

But don’t think I’m giving up the doodling. No way! My next step is to use the Twinkling H2Os to inspire my doodling. I will report back soon to show you how that’s worked for me.

"Artful Exploration Journals": Bling it On! By Joanne Sharpe.

Here you are, surrounded your collection of luscious Luminarte paints and mists…."Hmmm," you say, "but what does it all look like, the colors, the bling factor, how will it work my journal pages?"  How about creating an "Artful Exploration Journal",  where you can experiment and practice with different products before applying the techniques and creating pages in your "good" journal or final projects?  My "exploring" journal is an inexpensive sketchbook for technique tests, supply and color reference, playing with each product on the pages, labeling and recording my inventory.  This is so helpful when shopping for supplies or new colors of products.  It's a great tool for referencing colors when planning a project.

A black line drawing is painted with watercolor and assorted Twinks colors, then drenched in the Shimmering Mists Egyptian Gold, Blue Flame and Copper.  

Luminarte Radiant Rain Shimmering Mists pack a bold sparkle punch and captures every drop of light and reflects it off your page.  Don't be afraid to coat a whole page, a whole journal, it's bling at it's best.

Shimmer Shine and Whimsey with Joanne Sharpe

  We are so delighted to continually have such great guest artists. Today, I have the privilege to introduce Joanne Sharpe. She is a nationally recognized artist, and was teaching at CREATE in Costa Mesa in May. Her classes are so much FUN! She will be teaching at the CREATE in Chicago in August 24-28 in case you missed her in California. She has a distinct signature lettering and font style mixed in with her amazing whimsical and bold color illustrations. Her designs leave us feeling so uplifted about life and we are inspired and motivated to get out our supplies to create our own illustration. We cannot wait to see what she will do with our products. Welcome Joanne!

For many years, one of my favorite art supplies is my spectrum of Twinkling H2Os.  Being a hoarder “collector” of juicy art supplies, it was my quest to own every color.  Success!  But  now with the new “Twinks” brighter more concentrated sparkle my quest continues to own every color, so that I don’t miss a single shimmer!  

New favorites are the Radiant Rains dauber paint and Shimmering Mists.  Not being a dauber kind of girl, I find more gratification shaking the bottle well, taking the top off and pouring the color into a round paint palette. My favorite method is to use the Rains exactly as I do my watercolors.  They become a complete watercolor palette for my painted doodles, art journal pages and projects with a vibrant hues and intense shimmer.

You’ll frequently find many of my art journals “misted” with the Radiant Rain Shimmering Mists adding light, sparkle and glitz to the pages .  It just makes me happy to turn a page that pops with bling! I’ll have four project tutorials to share this month here as guest blogger, stay tuned!

Color, color, color by artist Dorit Elisha

Color is probably the most important part of my art. The more color I see – the happier I am, and the happier I am – the more color will show in my art. That’s just who I am. Most of the time I am drawn to the bright colors, so the Luminarte products are a perfect match for me.

I have some handmade books/journals that capture all my scraps from my printmaking projects, and with time, after I keep loading them with these scraps, they become a work of art by themselves.

This week I felt like adding some colorful touch-ups in the form of colorful stripes, frames and highlights to my pages, and what better paint than the Radiant Rain and H2O is there for this job?

I started by just painting free hand wide stripes of all the colors I have, and while they were still wet, I retouched them with a second (random) color, so they blended and created interesting spots on the paper. When they were dry and flat I just cut them into 1” and ½” wide stripes, and started adding them to specific spots on my books’ pages.

As you can see, my books just “burst  with color”, and that made me happy. I love just flipping through the pages over and over – it is almost like a therapeutic feeling for me.

Now that I have some colorful stripe's left over, why not weave them into a vibrant background paper which I can use to enhance a photo or a print? Here are some samples:

"Little Book" by Jane LaFazio

I just received this "Little Book" from Jane who is always making us incredible projects using Luminarte paints. Her cat, Buddy is making his first debut here too as he was curious to see what Jane made us. She calls it a Flag book which means that they have an accordion spine and the pages lie on either side of that spine, falling in opposite directions. It would be cute as a gift but I want to make one to give to my daughter who paints and writes little stories all the time. Let us know what you would do with this "Little Book"?

I used two  different Luminarte stencils, black spray paint, Radiant Rain Shimmering Mist peach (which is the red) and gold to create the cover on brown craft paper.

I attached pages of watercolor paper using washi tape.

The shimmery gold only shows in certain light.

I added the red tabs just for decoration.
